Surveyors Vests: Best Options from Safety Apparel

Consistent with established occupational safety practices, jobs that involve exposure to moving equipment and vehicles are required to comply with specific preventive and protective measures.

For surveyors, an important safety practice is to use high-visibility vests so that they can be easily seen from a distance. This minimizes struck-by hazards, especially at very bright or dim environments.

Safety Vests Standards

Safety vests, including surveyors or survey vests, are designed with specific guidelines in mind. These guidelines are based on factual events, risk assessments, and testings that led to a compilation of workwear standards that can effectively protect workers.

Today, these guidelines are compiled into the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) 107 for the USA and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Z96 for Canada. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) promotes these standards and requires companies and agencies to conform to them.

Workwear like surveyors vests are classified according to class:

  • Class 1 - provides minimum visibility; suitable for off-road jobs or sites where vehicles and equipment move below roadway speeds
  • Class 2 - constitutes more high-visibility materials for easy identification even from a distance; suitable for roadway and public safety jobs
  • Class 3 - provides the highest level of visibility, especially against complex backgrounds; suitable for roadway and public safety jobs

Hazards at Surveying Sites

Because surveyors work at different job sites, the health and safety hazards they face also vary. However, some of the common ones include:

  • Struck-by hazards
  • Debris from surrounding buildings or ongoing construction
  • Underground or subsurface utilities
  • Insects, stray animals, snakes
  • Extreme heat

Surveyors must analyze the hazards they are about to face every time they launch out to work. Depending on the conditions as their specific job site, they can use either a Class 1, Class 2, or Class 3 vest along with other suitable apparel and accessories.
