What is a Hybrid Mattress?

Anything hybrid is a combination product. It is made from two or more elements. It serves plural purposes or even cross-purposes. The Oxford dictionary defines the adjective hybrid as, “Of mixed character, composed of different elements.” A hybrid mattress fits the bill perfectly. It combines the two most prevalent mattress types – the innerspring and memory foam or latex mattresses.

How Did the Hybrid Mattress Evolve?

It is said that necessity is the mother of all inventions. In the case of hybrid mattresses, I will say, innovation is the answer to all discerning needs. As we entered the 21st century, our lives and lifestyles experienced a total transformation. From sufficiency, we graduated to efficiency. Technology, in particular, information technology took the center-stage. The invention of the internet and its commercial application changed our working patterns forever. Incidentally, globalization also took off as a parallel movement.

The result was an extraordinary change in our everyday lives. They became fast-paced. Also, intellectual activities prevailed over physical and vocational activities. The working hours also stretched, as expectations from individual workers grew. Continuous peak performance became the new normal.

As a result of these changes in our lives, physical and mental fatigue increased significantly. Sleep and rest, the only antidotes to fatigue, became precious. Man’s search for quality sleep became earnest. That search led to innovations in the way we sleep. It was a classic example of quality trying to make up for quantity. Since we slept less, we tried to sleep better. Newer materials and technologies were introduced in the sleep sector. That is how and when a tangible revolution took off in the mattresses market.

The hybrid mattress is one such revolutionary new-age innovations. It strives to offer better sleep through the combination formula.

What Is the Concept of the Hybrid Mattress?

This mattress is created to address two different sleeping styles. One needs the bounciness of coiled support but in a controlled manner. The other demands the wrap-around feel of soft, cushiony memory foam. As they move in bed, the mattress keeps embracing their body contours. The hybrid mattress meets these varying needs by combining the innerspring and memory foam technologies in one mattress.

This, in short, is the concept of hybrid mattresses. It is an innovation that combines the counter-needs of firmness and softness, bounciness and clingy embrace.

I have observed that of late, hybrid mattresses are gaining in popularity across various age-groups. These include the Gen-X as well as the discerning millennials. It means that preferences in the sleep sector are shifting from single-feature beds to combination beds. The reasons, according to my market study, are:

  • Suitable for singles and couples. The bounce of hybrid mattresses is not excessive. If sleeping alone, it provides manageable bounce while turning sides or altering positions. For couples, the controlled bounce is a real blessing. When a partner moves, the bounce does not disturb the other partner’s sleep.
  • Optimized comfort and luxury. The mix of functionality and affluent feeling does the trick.
  • Tapered edges. Contemporary buyers pay attention to ergonomics and aesthetics. Due to the innerspring constitution, hybrid mattresses are stylishly tapered at the edges. This gives a classier and refined look than the angled memory foam beds.
  • Some of us simply love innovative products. They hold a special appeal for us. The hybrid bed is bought because of its perception as an imaginative concept.

The concept of the hybrid mattress is a successful commercial experiment. It offers multiple winning propositions to the consumer.

What Is the Structure of the Hybrid Mattress?

I will divide this into two parts – the structure and the constitution of the mattress.

Hybrid mattresses are made of several layers of materials. Beginning from the bottom, these are:

Foam Layer Base

This layer is positioned beneath the support core. Its aim is to provide a cushiony base and stability. In quality hybrid mattresses, it is usually made of polyurethane or PU foam.

Why PU? Because it provides the following unique characteristics:

  • Sturdy and strong yet cushiony. PU has an unmatched strength-to-flexibility ratio.
  • High load bearing capacity in both tension and compression contexts. PU is a unique material. It deforms when under pressure but regains its original shape once the pressure is released.
  • PU adjusts to the load or pressure put on it.
  • Abrasion resistance. PU does not scratch or wear off easily.
  • Impact resistance. The material absorbs the impact of weight very well.
  • Tear-proof. It does not tear or disintegrate.
  • Water-resistant. A PU layer at the base of hybrid mattresses is a very thoughtful measure. The mattress does not get affected in case the floor gets wet or flooded.
  • Resistance to greasy and oily materials. It protects the mattress from spillages on the floor.
  • Resistance to mold, mildew, and Floors are made of, or covered with different materials. Wood, woolen or synthetic carpets, they are home to several bacterial colonies. PU safeguards the hybrid mattress from such ‘infections’ at the base.
  • Insulation from electrical currents. An excellent feature to make the mattress shock-proof!
  • Excellent bonding capacity. PU bonds well with a wide range of materials. These include plastics, metals, and natural materials such as wood. This property gives room for future innovations to improve the mattress’ performance.
  • Adapts to different climatic conditions. This gives high stability to the mattress in diverse climates.

Innerspring Coil Support Core

This is the ‘spine’ of a hybrid mattress. It is usually six to 7 inches in height and forms the bounce zone due to the springy coils. But that’s not all The innerspring area is vital for providing spinal support and relaxing various pressure points. This amounts to a vastly improved sleep quality. The neck, shoulders, hips, and other points that withstand the rigors of an active day get the much needed relaxation.

Let me take you through the structure of the coil core area to fully understand its functioning.

This zone lies directly above the PU base of the mattress. Its constitution is made of several horizontal and vertical rows of tubular vessels. The coils are placed inside these vessels to make coil compartments. When put in place, the entire structure looks like a symmetrical grid of coils. This grid offers a hybrid mattress its unique distinction. It produces:

  • Robust tensile strength
  • Recoiled energy within the springs that produce bounciness
  • Equal and uniform distribution of the bounce factor
  • Stability
  • Shock and impact bearing capacity

The Comfort Layer

This layer is placed above the coil grid. It is made from cushiony materials such as memory foam or latex. This layer is of three to 4 inches’ height. As we saw earlier, this layer is meant to give soft comfort, cushiony feel, body-hugging surface, and the resultant feeling of luxury and coziness.

This cushiony layer is responsible for a few important features that make hybrid mattresses so popular:

  • Controlled bounce. The pores of the cushion material and its cellular structure absorb the hard bounce of naked coils. Foam or latex act as a shock absorber. It ‘filters’ the excessive bounce and produces a gentle, enjoyable springy effect that is so welcoming. This feature is especially appealing to couples who share a bed. The bounce caused by one partner’s movement is not excessive to disturb the other partner’s sleep.
  • Well distributed bounce. The cushion spreads the bounce equally on the mattress’ surface. This avoids hard spots.
  • Cooling effect. Memory foam or latex possesses a temperature moderating property. As a result, the bed surface remains cool. This improves the quality of sleep. Additionally, it also controls the temperature of people whose bodies get overheated during sleep.

Pillow Top Layer

This is the top-most layer. I must caution, though, that it is not a standard feature of hybrid mattresses. Some discerning manufacturers include this layer in their products.

This layer substitutes a pillow. Its height is around one inch. It is either sewn with a gap between it and the mattress, r without this gap. The latter is also known as Euro top layer.

The material for this layer varies. Some alternatives are latex foam, memory foam, polyfoam, or even fiber-fill, cotton or wool.

Quality Parameters of Different Materials

A hybrid mattress is a multi-material product. There are several quality parameters of these materials. Discerning consumers can check for the below when buying a mattress.

Foam Density

This is about the material’s capacity to manage compression while maintaining its supportive strength. When a body rests on the mattress, its weigh puts pressure on the mattress’ surface. Now, the denser the comfort foam, the more efficiently it will handle the compression. Good density foam also retains its dimensions over time. It does not deform.

Foam density is measured in pounds per cubic foot. Good memory foam will have a density of 5.5 or above.

It is important to understand what a compromise with foam density will result in. High-density foam will produce the best motion isolation. It means that the bounce is more controlled due to the dense structure of the foam. On the other hand, low density will increase motion spread. This will cause discomfort to the sleeping partner and disrupt their sleep.

Foam Firmness

This factor is measured in a term called indentation load deflection, or ILD. Foam with high ILD will give better firmness, but it will be less body-hugging. Conversely, low ILD material will have lesser firmness but will be more cushioned.

ILD range for memory foam is eight to 20, and fifteen to 40 for latex foam.

Healthy and overweight persons should opt for high ILD foam. This is also true for those who sleep on their stomachs.

Coil Gauge

This is related to the thickness of the wires that make the coils. Good gauge coils ensure uniform, sustained bounce over a longer period. They will also retain the coil strength and shape for years.

Quality coils are made from steel or other alloys with high tensile strength. These materials do not rust. They also don’t corrode easily.

Coil gauge is key to the longevity of hybrid mattresses. Interestingly, the thicker the coil, the lesser its gauge is. For example, 10-gauge coil is thicker than the 15-gauge coil. Ideally, quality hybrid mattresses provide coil gauge between twelve and 18.

Coil Count

This is another vital factor that affects the mattress’ performance and life. Higher coil count across the vertical and horizontal rows will produce a denser coil grid. However, for best results, coil count should be optimized, not maximized. The ideal count is up to 1,000. Denser coil count beyond 1,000 will be counter-productive.

The veracity of the above parameters depends on actual experience.

I appreciate that buying a hybrid mattress is a strategic decision. In many cases, the consumer would be shifting from standalone memory foam or innerspring beds to this mattress. The decision also involves a significant expense.

I strongly recommend that the purchase of hybrid beds should be made after experiencing its features at a physical store. Consumers should also discuss the above parameters in detail with the brand staff. Most of them offer various combinations and permutations. Do check them out. Opt for the best solution that meets your individual requirements.

Pros and Cons of Hybrid Mattresses?

In my studied opinion, the positives outweigh the negatives of hybrid beds.

However, I concede that hybrid beds are relatively new in the market. To help consumers decide what is in their best interest, I list the pros and cons of hybrid mattresses as below.

Pros of Hybrid Mattresses

The Bounce Factor

Who does not love a little bit of bounce in life?

The hybrid beds manifest our inborn desire for a springy life.

I dare say, we go to bed for two purposes. For sleep and for physical intimacy. The bounce factor offers better quality for both the purposes. We have already checked the reasons for this earlier, so I will not repeat them.

In addition, the controlled nature of bounce does not disturb the partner’s sleep. This is true for even pets!

Body-Embracing Contours

We all twist, turn and move in our sleep. The foam layer embraces our bodies throughout those motions. Many of us also sleep in multiple positions. When we are ‘tired’ of sleeping on sides, we lie on our backs. The soft hug of the upper layer never leaves us, regardless of our sleeping position.

Cooling Factor

The foam layer helps in keeping the surface cool. It increases comfort. It also reduces the discomfort of those who over-heat during sleep.

Advantage of Inbuilt Pillow

The pillow top layer is a valuable addition. It does away with the need of having pillows separately on the bed.

Multiple Options and Choices

The market is flush with innovation. Different brands offer various options. These are centered around varying firmness, softness, types of top layers, innerspring gauges, and more. Consumers can make an informed decision after checking out various brands and their range of options.

Cons of Hybrid Mattresses

While the advantages are appealing, there are some negative factors. Here is a reality check:

Hybrid beds are priced higher than standalone innerspring or memory foam beds. This is understandable since they combine the features of both. That said, good quality hybrids top the price of memory foam by around 10%. When compared with innerspring beds, they can be costlier by up to 40%.

The Sleep Help Institute provides good price guidance. It says that a quality queen size hybrid bed costs around $1000. This is $400 costlier than a good quality innerspring mattress. It is costlier by $100 when compared to memory foam beds. The website further says that high-end hybrids may cost up to $4,000.

Shorter Life

Due to the multi-tier structure and multi-material constitution, hybrid beds have a shorter life than all-foam or innerspring variants. Do discuss this point with the brand sales staff before making a final decision.

Bulky and Heavy

The weight of hybrid beds is more than the other mattress types. Again, this is due to the multiple layers and different materials used in the mattress.

In a conventional sense, heavier is stronger. However, it is entirely up to the consumer. My duty is to make the point!

Potential for Off Gassing

Hybrid beds have the potential to emit an unpleasant odor when unpacked and unwrapped. This can be the case if the mattress is made with a foam upper layer and absence of a bed covering. However, this odor is passing. It will go away within a short time after unwrapping the bed.  It is not as intense as all-foam beds. And it is completely harmless.

Which are the Top Hybrid Mattress Brands?

The mattress market is excited about the hybrid innovation. Almost all players are jumping in the fray. They obviously want to have their cut of the cake.

The abundance of choice could be confusing for shoppers. The similarity of claims being made may compound the confusion. When two leading brands proclaim that their hybrid beds the best, one does not know who to believe. Below, I provide snippet reviews of some leading hybrid brands. They are arranged in ascending order, price-wise.

Helix – It uses dynamic foam as the top layer, and offers customizable firmness. At $995 for a hybrid Queen, its price aligns with the market leaders’ average.

Tomorrow – It has a sub-brand for hybrid named “Sleep Hybrid”. It uses memory foam and comes with two firmness options – medium soft and medium firm. Price for Queen bed is $990.

Nest Bedding – offers the royal-sounding Alexander Signature Hybrid model. Its top layer is quilted memory foam. The brand is among the few who offers pillow top. Two firmness options – medium and luxury. Price for Queen size is $1199.

Purple – It markets its hybrid model as New Purple Mattress. The top layer is a hyper-elastic polymer. It has three firmness variants – medium soft, medium, and medium firm. Its Queen bed is sold at a retail price between $1599 and $2799.

Sapira – markets hybrids with the same name. The top layer is made of polyfoam + memory foam. Firmness on offer is medium firm. Price for Queen bed is $1475.

Apart from these brands, Saatva, My Green, and Wink Beds also enjoy leadership status in the hybrid mattresses’ market.

Important points to note are:

  1. Free trial nights. Almost all leading brands offer a trial period of up to a hundred nights. Make sure to get the most of this offer.
  2. Brands also offer a product warranty of between 10 and 15 years.
  3. Lastly, the no-questions-asked return policy is part of all brands’ selling propositions.

Hybrid mattresses are a sustainable market innovation. My sense is that they are here to stay. Over the years, its market will grow in size and stature. In all probability, they will occupy the market mainstay within the next two or 3 years. They will become as common as smart televisions.

The reasons for hybrid beds’ growing popularity are understandable. Today, sleep is becoming scares. It is a luxury for certain people who lead hyperactive lives. Such people will not mind spending more to get a better quality of sleep. As I said in the introduction, since they sleep less, they want to sleep better. It is proven that quality sleep of lesser time refreshes the body and mind better than more sleep of lesser quality.

The hybrid breed f mattresses fulfill this unmet or under-met need of contemporary working class. They are a smart option for smart people.

Interestingly, hybrid beds are being perceived as the choice of thoughtful and mindful people. They are also increasingly aligned with sophistication and refined taste.

Gazing into my crystal ball, I dare to predict that hybrid beds will even embrace AI in a big way. This will not take much time. It is my educated guess that within three years, the sleep sector will have the choice of smart hybrids. This will take the sleep experience to the next level of sophistication and automation. One will just need to speak to the bed, “adjust my firmness level to level 6.” The hybrid will obey and switch to medium firmness. Or, there will be on-demand, adjustable bed height. One will have to instruct the bed to adjust the coil compartment’s height, and it will be done.

Ahoy! The future of smarthybrid mattresses is here!

Best Mattress for Back Sleepers

Sleep experts consistently advocate for back sleeping, as it is believed to be the easiest on the spine and the least likely to lead to soreness or wrinkles. Despite consistent advocacy for back sleeping, this is by far the rarest sleep position, with the National Sleep Foundation reporting that just eight percent of adults sleep on their backs.

Downsides and Challenges of Back Sleeping

There are few personal downsides to back sleeping, but it can be aggravating for others if you share your room — and if you happen to snore. Unfortunately, back sleeping aggravates snoring, which can keep others awake. Some people believe that back sleeping is problematic for those with sleep apnea, but research actually indicates that the prone (stomach) position is more harmful for apnea sufferers.

Mattresses for Back Sleepers

Back sleepers need a nice mix between stiff coils and soft foam — they’re the Goldilocks of mattress requirements. An overly soft mattress does not provide the support back sleepers need, thereby causing the body to sink too much into the bed. Overly firm mattresses put too much pressure on the shoulders and back, causing aches and pains in the morning. Many people alternate between sleeping on their side and back, and if the mattress is too firm, the quality of sleep while in the fetal position can be negatively impacted. Ultimately, mattress selection depends not only on sleep position, but also whether that position changes over time and whether the bed is shared with another person. The following are the best mattresses for back sleepers:

Purple-Mattress.jpg?strip=all&lossy=1&quality=70&resize=643%2C306&ssl=1 1024w, 300w, 768w, 450w, 50w, 1193w, 234w, 702w, 936w" alt="purple mattress" width="643" height="306" data-lazy-type="image" data-src="" data-srcset="" />

Purple is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a contouring mattress not constructed from memory foam. The no-pressure mattress features a polymer gel layer, which offers excellent pressure point relief and a unique floating sensation. A versatile mattress, it can accommodate all sleeping positions — including supine, which is notoriously difficult to shop for. Point elasticity is exceptional for the Purple, thereby making it perfect for sleeping with a partner (particularly a supine sleeping partner). The downside of Purple is that it is a one-size-fits-all mattress; adjustments can therefore only be made with toppers or mattress pads.

If you primarily sleep on your back, you can expect fewer aches and pains each morning — especially if you invest in a high-quality mattress. For the best sleep possible, aim for medium firm mattresses that provide a mix of support and contouring. Keep your secondary sleep position in mind, as many back sleepers shift onto their sides or flip into a supine position. A versatile mattress can provide the support you need while also accommodating your partner. Choose carefully — the quality of your mattress can have a direct impact on your general health and wellbeing.

Brentwood Home Ojai

Brentwood is one of my favorite brands. They are a vertically integrated company which means they make all their mattresses in the factory they own. If you are primarily a back sleeper, you will appreciate the support that the Ojai mattress provides. It combines a latex and a gel foam layer to give you good pressure relief without a lot of sinking in. Because of the latex it is very responsive and will keep you cool.

Zen Haven

Some back sleepers find it all but impossible to sleep on memory foam, as they feel as if they are sinking into the bed. Latex provides a far different feel; there is some contouring, but also a sensation of resting on top of the mattress, as opposed to sinking into it. Zen Haven mattresses can be flipped where one side is firmer and the other softer. Back sleepers tend to prefer Zen Haven’s firm side. The soft side is best for side sleepers. This is one of the few natural latex mattresses with a money back trial period. If you’re new to latex and want to try it out without the risk. Zen Haven is an excellent choice.

Bear Mattress

Specifically designed for the active individual, the Bear Mattress is intended to help athletes and exercise enthusiasts recover overnight so that they can get back up on their feet the next day. This means minimizing pressure points — the last thing active types need are lingering aches and pains from their overly firm mattresses. The medium firmness of the Bear accommodates most individuals, including back sleepers and combination back and side sleepers. The mattress has four layers of supportive foam, but its Celiant cover is most impressive, especially given Bear’s relatively low price point.

The Novosbed comes in three firmness ratings. The medium and firm options (formerly known as the Aria and Classic) are best for back sleepers, as they minimize sinking. If, after ordering the Novosbed, you find that it isn’t as soft or firm as you desire, you can order a free kit that will help you adjust the mattress to your liking. This is a nice option for back sleepers, as it can be difficult to pinpoint the correct firmness. All of Novosbed’s firmness levels feature super soft top covers and elastic covers designed to protect the foam core.

Hybrid mattresses are excellent for back sleepers, who sometimes require greater firmness than standard memory foam can provide.  Winkbeds combine spring technology with foam, thereby ensuring both comfort and support. Tempered support springs promote localized relief for pressure points, while hypersoft foam offers the buoyancy that memory foam sometimes lacks. Winkbeds are compatible with adjustable frames, which many back sleepers prefer.

Best Mattress for Stomach Sleepers

If there’s one consistent piece of advice researchers offer about sleeping (other than getting at least seven hours of it each night) it’s that a prone position in which the stomach rests on the bed is to be avoided at all costs. The National Sleep Foundation reports that stomach sleeping is the preferred option for seven percent of adults, but also that it is one of the most harmful positions. However, many of the typically cited downsides of stomach sleeping can be avoided simply by investing in the right mattress.

I am primarily a stomach sleeper and it can be hard to find a good mattress that has the right amount of firmness but still giving you good pressure relief.

Benefits of Stomach Sleeping

Stomach sleeping consistently gets a bad rap, but there are a few situations in which this position can be beneficial. Among adults, stomach sleeping can minimize snoring, and some sleep apnea sufferers report that stomach sleeping allows them to get a better night’s sleep. The research does not necessarily back this opinion up, however, as a study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine indicates that prone sleeping actually increases the frequency of apneas, albeit not the duration.

Downsides of Stomach Sleeping

As mentioned above, supine sleeping may actually be detrimental for those with sleep apnea, even if it reduces snoring. It’s also a poor choice for those who suffer from chronic back pain, as the position inevitably involves the compression of the lower back. Most stomach sleepers rest with their head turned to the side, an extreme position that can be hard on the neck. Stomach sleeping is believed to speed up the formation of wrinkles, as the skin crunches up against the sleeper’s pillow. This problem can be eased, somewhat, with the use of a silk pillowcase, which, in addition to preventing short-term creasing, is believed to assist with sebum retention.

Mattresses For Stomach Sleepers

If, after reading up on all the downsides of stomach sleeping, you are determined to continue to rest in a supine position, it is imperative that you invest in a good mattress that will give your body the support it needs. The right mattress can ease a lot of the problems associated with stomach sleeping — especially morning aches and pain. A firm mattress is best, as it allows your body to maintain the best possible alignment while in the supine position. The following mattresses are great choices for stubborn stomach sleepers:

Best Performance Mattress for Stomach Sleepers:

Layla Mattress

Foam mattresses are generally best suited to side sleepers, who prefer to feel as if they are sleeping “in” the mattress, as opposed to “on” it. This slight feel of sinking is to be avoided at all costs for stomach sleepers, as it causes the back to bow out, thereby harming alignment. A few select foam mattresses are acceptable, however — particularly those specifically designed for firmness. Layla mattresses are unique in that they have two built-in firmness ratings. Stomach sleepers tend to prefer the firmer side, which features copper-infused memory foam. The Layla is a preferred option for those who, over time, wish to switch from sleeping on their stomach to sleeping on their side or back. If stomach sleeping is eventually achieved, the mattress can simply be flipped onto its softer side.

Stomach sleepers have specific needs that often cannot be accommodated by standard mattresses, which are frequently constructed with back and side sleepers in mind. A personalized mattress can better accommodate sleeping quirks, especially if constructed according to the sleeper’s weight, height, and body contour. Helix excels at personalization, requiring all customers to complete a questionnaire before ordering a mattress specifically designed to meet their needs via four key performance characteristics: point elasticity, temperature regulation, support, and feel. The mattresses feature a mix of microcoils, latex, and high-grade foam to ensure both support and comfort all night long.

Best Mattress for Side Sleepers

There’s something really comfortable about curling up on your side, which, perhaps, explains why the vast majority of adults sleep this way. According to the National Sleep Foundation, 15 percent of adults sleep on their side with their legs outstretched, while another 41 percent sleep in the fetal position, with their back hunched and their legs bent. Side sleeping is particularly common among pregnant women, who might otherwise struggle to accommodate their growing baby bumps. With the right mattress, side sleeping can provide superior rest, all while improving circulation and preventing snoring.

Benefits of Side Sleeping

Side sleeping just feels natural. It just feels nice to curl up in the fetal position and drift off to sleep. For pregnant women, this position is particularly beneficial, as it prevents the fetus from pressing up against the liver. Side sleeping is also a good option for those who tend to snore. If the spine is kept elongated, this position can minimize sleep-associated neck and back pain. Some side sleepers also report fewer acid reflux symptoms, as compared to other positions. Side sleeping may also be the most beneficial for the brain; research from Stony Brook University indicates that lateral (side) sleepers are more effectively able to rid their brain of the waste that contributes to Alzheimer’s disease. This waste is discarded via the glymphatic pathway, which is most efficient at night, and especially while the body is in a lateral position.

Challenges Faced By Side Sleepers

Side sleeping can be incredibly comfortable, but there are a few notable drawbacks. When sleeping in a fetal position, breathing can be restricted. Those worried about the visual signs of aging tend to avoid side sleeping, as spending so many hours with the face crunched up on a pillow can lead to wrinkles. For side sleepers of all ages — but particularly those above the age of 50 — curling up in the fetal position can lead to soreness in the morning. This can be prevented to some extent by placing a pillow between the knees, but a supportive mattress is also important.

Best Mattresses For Side Sleepers

Side sleepers typically prefer a softer surface, as this allows them to sink into the mattress while they are curled up on their side. Ideally, a softer mattress will also accommodate the natural curve of the spine and maintain proper alignment throughout the night. Memory foam’s superior contouring makes it an especially wise option for side sleepers, who require as little pressure on the shoulders and hips as possible.

The Oceano Mattress from Brentwood Home sells itself. The quality of materials and construction make it a thing of beauty and it feels as good as it looks. You get a great hug with this mattress but also quick recovery due to its pocket coil base layer and a layer of micro coils on top of that. Throw in the 2-inch gel foam layer, natural wool fire barrier, and hand tufting and you have a mattress that sets the bar for quality at this price point. I have had the Oceano in the Sleep Sherpa showroom for the past 6 weeks and everyone gravitates to it. A large portion of side sleepers end up purchasing it as well.

Best Spring Mattress for Side Sleepers

For those struggling to choose between the contouring abilities of memory foam and the greater support and resilience of innerspring mattresses, there is a third and arguably better option: hybrid mattresses. These feature a unique combination of foam and innerspring construction. Winkbeds combine these two distinctive sleep technologies to great effect, thereby ensuring that side sleepers enjoy both the plush feel of foam and the extra support associated with spring mattresses. Side sleepers tend to gravitate towards the outer perimeter of their mattresses; Winkbeds addresses this with its dense perimeter of high-ILD foam, which is designed to prevent the sagging that might occur over time with a lower-quality mattress.

No one mattress is perfect for every type of sleeper — even preferences among side sleepers can vary considerably. In general, however, side sleepers do best with slightly softer mattresses that avoid placing pressure on the shoulders or hips. No matter your preferred position, the right mattress can have a huge impact on your health and happiness, so choose carefully.

Molecule Mattress

You know who sleeps on a Molecule mattress? Tom Brady from the New England Patriots. If it’s good enough for Tom Brady, chances are it will be for you too. This mattress is extremely breathable for an all-foam mattress which means you won’t wake up sweaty at night or throwing off covers. By keeping your temperature regulated you will stay asleep longer and get more restorative sleep. But temperature aside, this mattress is just plain wonderful for side sleepers. It has excellent pressure relief without being too soft or firm which is a hard balance to strike in an all-foam mattress.

Zinus Green Tea Mattress

Zinus Mattress

The Zinus Green Tea mattress is your best bet for a mattress under $500. This mattress comes in different thickness levels and for side sleepers, you need to get the 12-inch version. Best Mattress for Hot Sleepers

Sleeping hot is becoming a growing concern among mattress shoppers. I think this is in large part because more mattresses on the market are incorporating foam into their construction. Most innerspring systems nowadays have a layer of foam for comfort. There’s no doubt that memory foam is one of the best materials for pressure relief which is why it is everywhere. However, the drawback is that it also functions as an insulator. There’s a reason that spray foam insulation is being used in houses.  So, what are your options for a good mattress for hot sleepers? I created the list below of some great mattresses for hot sleepers.

Eight Sleep Pod

Eight Sleep PodThe new Pod from Eight Sleep is not necessarily a mattress. It’s a complete comfort system that dynamically regulates your temperature as you sleep to give you the most restorative sleep possible. This is done by circulating water through tubes at the top of the mattress. The water is conditioned so that it can be warm or cool depending on your needs. It is can also be zoned so you and your partner can have different temperatures at the same time!

The bed integrates with an app on your phone to track your sleep and provide coaching on how to use the system to optimize your rest and recovery. Not only that but it can also integrate with other smart devices so that when it senses you getting into or leaving your bed it can adjust your thermostat or even start your coffee maker.

With the Eight Sleep Pod you can look forward to coming home to a warm bed on a cold night or chill out in a cool bed on a hot summer night. The choice is yours!

Molecule Mattress

molecule mattress hot sleepers

Who sleeps on the Molecule Mattress? Well for starters, star NFL quarterback, Russell Wilson does, and that’s just the start. Every month more and more top athletes are taking to the Molecule mattress to get optimal recovery. Athletes understand the importance of sleep and recovery and its correlation to performance.

The Molecule was engineered for comfort but also cooling. The super open cell foam breathes very well and will keep you in a deeper state of sleep longer than a traditional foam mattress. It’s hard to find a breathable foam mattress that is actually comfortable and has great pressure relief but the Molecule hits the mark. Read our full Molecule Mattress Review.

purple mattress

Hands down the Purple mattress is the best mattress for addressing heat retention. That’s because the Purple grid allows body heat to pass right through it. This mattress is a little on firmer end of the spectrum and in my opinion is best for back or stomach sleepers. Side sleepers should look for more contouring mattress.  To get the most out of your purple mattress, it’s best to buy a purple mattress protector and either purple sheets or stretchy sheets like Sheex or Bedgear sheets. The base layer of the Purple mattress is made of foam but the contouring and pressure relief comes from the purple grid.  Get the full Purple Mattress Review.

The Sleepovation mattress is actually 700 tiny mattresses that make up a super conforming sleeping surface that contours beyond what a solid piece of foam can do. Because the coil and foam pieces all work independently they also create channels for air to pass through making this one of the most breathable mattresses on the market. If you crave the feel of memory foam but don’t like to sweat this is the mattress for you. There are no compromises with this mattress, only benefits.

Read the full Sleepovation Review

A traditional inner spring mattress will almost always sleep cooler than a memory foam mattress. That’s because the coils create space for the mattress to breathe. But, once you get the feel for foam, it’s hard to go back to an inner spring. The Winkbed gives you all the benefits of a spring mattress along with the contouring and coziness that foam provides. Their top layer of very light foam is very responsive and breathable. The cover is made of Tencel fiber which is more breathable than cotton. This mattress is also on the firmer end of the spectrum but offers excellent lumbar support.

Brentwood Home Oceano

oceano mattress

Brentwood home is a vertically integrated mattress company. They own the factory where they make their mattresses which allows them to create luxury mattresses at extremely competitive prices. The Oceano feels like a high-end luxury hotel mattress that should cost two to three times as much. They hand tuft this mattress which creates channels for air flow. The natural wool fire barrier also serves as a sort of thermometer to help regulate temperature. Below that is a layer of gel foam then miro coils followed by a layer of pocket coils. All these materials together make for a cozy yet cool sleeping mattress.

Get the full Oceano Review

In addition to a cool sleeping mattress, make sure that you have sheets that are breathable. I like Tencel/Cotton blend sheets which are available through Molecule. are an excellent choice in this regard. I am still surprised at how many people complain about sleeping hot but sleep with a down comforter. An easy step to remedy this is to ditch the down and layer up. Start with one light blanket and add from there. In the summer I use a cotton coverlet. Heat rises so the majority of your hot sleeping issues will come from your top layer trapping too much heat.

If you already love yourmattress or fell in love with the feel of a mattress but it sleeps too hot, you may want to invest in a Bedjet. The Bedjet can cool and/or warm your bed by blowing conditioned air between the sheets. It really works and is a simple upgrade that can make a world of difference. Check out my Bedjet review.

It has a phase change material on the top that also keeps you cool for an all foam mattress. Granted foam is an insulator so will sleep hotter than some other constructions but I think that no other material provides better pressure relief than foam. For the money, Nectar is probably the best value out there. On top of all of this you get a 365 Night Trial where if you don’t like it after having it for a year, you can return it for free. Purple Mattress

mattresses for heavy people

According to Purple, the weight threshold of their mattress is 300 lbs. per person. That means it can support 600 lbs. total assuming each person weights 300 lbs. What I especially like about this mattress is how cool it sleeps. Hot air passes right through the polymer elastic grid just below the mattress ticking so you won’t sleep hot at all on this mattress. It also supports you very well and won’t leave you sore in the morning. The Purple mattress uses a very unique technology at a very competitive price. Best of all they have a free trial money back guarantee so there’s no risk in trying it out. There is some bounce with this mattress since the grid will recover instantly which makes it super easy to change positions at night. I recommend the purchasing the Purple bed frame along with the mattress because the purple bed frame will support up to 4,600 pounds without bending or breaking!

Zen Haven

zen-haven-mattresszen haven mattress

The Zen Haven mattress is really two mattresses in one. This all natural Talalay latex mattress can be flipped where one side is soft and the other firm. What I especially like about it is that it comes with a free trial period. This is very rare with all latex mattresses. All Talalay latex will feel pretty much the same because there are only a handful of manufacturers of this latex. That means it really comes down to price and trial period. Zen Haven comes with a 75-night free trial so you have nothing to lose. Latex is a very resilient material and you should easily get 20 years out of an all natural latex mattress. How To Clean a Mattress

Is it possible to clean a mattress? It depends on what you mean by clean and how dirty your mattress actually is. I have come across a lot of articles that advocated sprinkling baking soda on your mattress and letting that soak up odor then vacuuming it off. This may help a bit, but not much. If you think that’s going to rid your mattress of dust mites, think again. If your mattress is stinky, or has been left unprotected for too long, your best bet is to start fresh with a new mattress.

Nasty-Mattress-1.jpg?strip=all&lossy=1&quality=70&resize=602%2C512&ssl=1 1024w, 300w, 768w, 450w, 50w, 1273w, 234w, 702w, 936w, 1170w" alt="Nasty Mattress" width="602" height="512" data-lazy-type="image" data-src="" data-srcset="" />

If you live in a cooler, dry climate your changes of having a major dust mite problem decrease dramatically. For instance, someone living in New Mexico will have far less problems with dust mites than someone in Florida with constant humidity. That’s because dust mites can’t thrive in a dry environment.

Back to the cleaning. Baking soda, Febreeze, even the Allergen Reducing Febreeze aren’t much more than a band aid that masks a larger problem. It will probably help a bit but not get to the root of the problem.

I have also come across a company called Clean Sweep which will come out to your house and clean your mattress for $109.95 with additional mattresses for $89.95. Below is a video showing their process.

The ways they claim to clean a mattress are as follows:

  • Ultra Violet Light
  • Dry Steam
  • Vacuuming
  • Ozone Generation
  • Infrared Heat

clean a mattress

You can actually buy a UV light vacuum on Amazon that is designed to kill dust mites in bedding. But my questions is how do you know you killed them all and how far into the mattress will this penetrate?

Their second method of dry steam leaves the same question about penetration but it is nice to know that they are using another method to kill those dust mites and whatever else may be lurking in your mattress. To sanitize, the steam I have read that the steam needs to be at least 200 degreed Farenheit and the surface must be treated with steam for 5 minutes.

Their Ozone treatment is also novel. Ozone generators are used in Ambulances to kill germs and bacteria and deodorize them in about 30-60 minutes. And yes, even Amazon sells an ozone generator.

Ozone-Generator.jpg?strip=all&lossy=1&quality=70&resize=601%2C601&ssl=1 1024w, 150w, 300w, 768w, 450w, 50w, 1500w, 234w, 702w, 936w, 1170w" alt="Ozone Generator" width="601" height="601" data-lazy-type="image" data-src="" data-srcset="" />

The last method is infrared heat. This company will heat the mattress to 150 degrees while the other cleaning processes are ocurring. This rids the mattress of excess moisture which plays a large part in causing the build up of dust mites in the first place. I don’t think Amazon can help you here.

Sleep Sherpa’s Top Pick for Cleaning A Mattress

Raycop-RS2-mattress-vaccuum-cleaner.jpg?strip=all&lossy=1&quality=70&resize=601%2C451&ssl=1 1024w, 300w, 768w, 450w, 50w, 1500w, 234w, 702w, 936w, 1170w" alt="Raycop RS2 Mattress Vaccuum" width="601" height="451" data-lazy-type="image" data-src="" data-srcset="" />

So far the best device I found to clean a mattress is the Raycop RS2. This uses UV light to kill bacteria and viruses but also vibrates to loosen dirt and dust mite debris then vaccuums it into a HEPA filter. I was amazed at how much gunk I got out of some of my mattresses. We now use this in the Sleep Sherpa mattress store in Minneapolis to keep our mattresses clean. Here’s the full Raycop RS2 Review

If its close to time for a new mattress anyway, I recommend a fresh start with a brand new mattress. Once you find your perfect mattress, take care of it from the start with at least a mattress protector or better yet, a mattress encasement. In fact, the publication, Clinical and Experimental Allergy,, a journal of the British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology published a study on the effectiveness of mattress encasements in preventing dust mites.

mattress protector

If you don’t have dust mite allergies or haven’t noticed excessive sneezing, coughing or stuffiness in the morning after waking up, you probably don’t have a dust mite problem and could avoid themattress cleaning process. My advice though is that when you do get your next mattress, make sure it is protected to extend its life and to keep your bedroom clean and healthy.

Finally, it’s not just your mattress that is prone to dust mites, make sure your pillows are fresh too! You can buy pillow encasements as well but I recommend just purchasing a fresh pillow. If your pillow is causing you dust mite issues, it’s time for a new one anyway.

Why are Hotel Mattresses So Comfortable?

Visitors to Sleep Sherpa often ask me where they can buy a mattress from the hotel where they recently stayed. Surprisingly, it isn’t just 5-star hotels like the Four Seasons. I also get this question about Holiday Inn and Best Western. I know for a fact that the Mandarin Oriental in Boston doesn’t have the same mattress as Red Roof in but customers often report sleeping better in a hotel than in their own mattress at home. So, why is this happening? There are a few simple reasons for this and knowing why you sleep better in a hotel will help you sleep better in your own home.

The Hotel Halo Effect

The Hotel halo effect is typically reserved for fancy hotels. What can you classify as a fancy hotel? Any hotel where the room is fancier than your bedroom. Walking into a room that smells fresh, is spotless and has crisp clean linens on the bed with a fancy view will immediately give you a sense of calm. A good hotel knows that scents have power. If it smells pleasant and clean you will make a connection that the room as a whole is pleasant and clean. Larger chains like The Westin even have their signature white tea scent that you can purchase for your own home. If you go into any Westing around the world you will notice this scent and if you are a frequent traveler this will be a welcoming smell.

The Best Night’s Sleep for Everyone

Good hotels understand that not everyone has the same needs when it comes to comfort. Fancy hotels now offer pillow menus where you can select a pillow based on your individual needs. Pillows can be thick or thin, soft, medium or firm, and you can even select the material from feathers, synthetic or natural. Even a budget hotel like a Holiday Inn Express will have 2 soft and 2 firm pillows on their beds.

Most mattresses will be a medium-firm feel. Having multiple pillow options will help accommodate the standard firmness. Fancier hotels will add a feather bet on top of the mattress to provide a little more sink without losing support. Just about all hotels still have mattresses with coils. This is because most people still sleep on coils at home and if you ask me, coils are still a great technology despite all the innovations with foam.

Travelling Makes You Tired

After a long day of waking up early to get to the airport, a long, uncomfortable flight, waiting for luggage and taking an Uber to your hotel, a nice clean hotel room is a welcome sight. Travelling is exhausting and it’s no wonder that our first night sleeping after a day of travel is going to be beneficial. You may not actually get better quality sleep in a hotel but since you are so tired, it probably seems that way. In fact, our bodies get poorer quality sleep in a new environment. It’s called the First Night Effect. This is a phenomenon where our brains our extra vigilant, even as we sleep because they act as a night watch in an unfamiliar surrounding. So while you may feel more refreshed the day after traveling, chances are you are probably just relieved to be done with it all and you can count on even better sleeping the following night.

Get the Hotel Sleep Experience at Home

So if you are craving a good night’s rest in a hotel, you may want to give your own bedroom a quick facelift. It doesn’t take much. First, clear out the clutter. Your bedroom should be as clean and welcoming as possible. This helps you let down your guard and eliminates all the visual noise so you feel some serenity. Get the clothes off the exercise bike or better yet, just get rid of the exercise bike altogether! Upgrade your bedding. It’s amazing what a white duvet cover with white sheets can do for a room. Get a diffuser and fill it with a scent that you associate with relaxation.

Hotels are mindful of lighting, if there’s too much light getting into your bedroom in the morning, you will probably wake up too early. Blackout shades or heavy curtains will do the trick.

I love traveling and the excitement of staying at a nice hotel and sleeping in is so fun. Each time you stay at a hotel where you sleep well, take note of your surroundings and see if you can take a piece of it back to your own bedroom. If you think it’s time to upgrade your mattress, check out all our mattress reviews.

Are you wondering if your mattress is too old? If you are asking yourself that question, chances are it is. But, if you want to be sure consider some of the following questions.

  1. When did you buy your mattress?

The typical lifespan of a mattress is around 7-8 years before you can expect some notceable breakdown in performance.

2. What type of material is it made of?

I often get asked which breaks down faster, springs or foam? The answer depends on the qualtity of both.

If you have a mattress made with dense foam, think memory foam that is slow to conform and slow to recover. This type of foam will last longer than some of the less dense foams on the market which are designed to be more responsive.

Coil systems also can vary in quality. If you have lower gauge coils that are firmer, they will also hold up longer but be less conforming.

Mattresses made of natural latex can last a long time upwards of 15 years. That’s because latex is a very durable material that isn’t as prone to breaking down as memory foam. However the trade off is that it doesn’t conform as well and can be more expensive than memory foam.

3. How Heavy are you?

Finally, your weight and amount of use of the mattress also affects lifespan. Heavier people will wear down a mattress much longer than a light person. I can say for certain but I imagine for every 10 lbs. over 200 lbs in weight, you can subract 6 months off the lifespan of a typical mattress.

4. How often do you use your mattress?

If you have a matttress in a vacation home you rarely use, that will last much longer than the mattress you use every night. However even an unused mattress will still age over time.

5. Did you buy a quality mattress to begin with?

If you bought a mattress with inexpensive components or poor construction you may not even get 3 years of good life out of it. You often get what you pay for, up to a point. Stay away from some of the bargain basement deals and makes sure that you know what is going in to your new mattress.

6. How does your mattress feel?

If you wake up in the moring with a sore back or you find yourself tossing and turning all night, then it’s your body’s way of telling you that you’re not getting proper support. Extra pillows can help but that is a bandaid approach. Stop by a mattress store to give a new mattress a test drive to see how they feel compared to yours at home. Give yourself enough time on the mattress, at least 15 minutes before making any conclusions.

If if it turns out you do need a mattress, you’re in luck. There are some great online brands out there that are affordable, have excellent free trial periods and feel amazing.

Leesa vs Nectar Mattress

If you’re looking for a Leesa vs Nectar comparison, this should make your decision much easier. In this post I break down all the pros and cons of each mattress to help you decide which is right for you. Both the Nectar and Leesa are great mattresses but each have a distinct feel that will appeal to different types of sleepers. There are no winners or loosers here, just clarification for you so that you get the right mattress the first time.

Overview of Nectar vs Leesa Mattress

The video below gives you a side by side comparison of both mattresses. As you can see in the video below, my bowling ball reacts very different on each of the mattresses.

Both of these mattresses come with a generous trial period.

Leesa free trial period = 100 Days

Nectar free trial period – 365 Days

Here’s the breakdown on prices of the mattresses

Leesa mattress price = $940 (Queen Size)

Nectar mattress price = $795 (Queen Size)

Both of these companies offer discounts on a regular basis. Leesa tends to have a $100 off coupon making the queen size $840 and Nectar has $125 off with 2 free pillows making the price $670.

There is a significant difference in price here but not so much that it would be a deal breaker if one is better suited to your needs.

Leesa Mattress Construction and Materials

What gives the Leesa mattress that extra bounce you saw in the video is that they use a layer of Avena foam on top. The cooling comes into play in that it is convoluted (think egg crate shaped) so that there are channels for air to circulate.

Leesa-Mattress-Construction.jpg?strip=all&lossy=1&quality=70&resize=600%2C297&ssl=1 1024w, 300w, 768w, 50w, 1745w, 234w, 468w, 702w, 936w, 1170w" alt="Leesa Mattress Construction" width="600" height="297" data-lazy-type="image" data-src="" data-srcset="" />

  • 10 inches total height
  • Top layer is 2 inches of Avena foam, which is a polyurethane foam that performs like latex
  • Below that is a 2 inch layer of memory foam for extra comfort and pressure relief.
  • The base layer is a 6 inch high density foam used as the support base. It is the foundation of the Leesa matttress.

Nectar Mattress Construction and Materials

11 inches total height

Top layer is made 1 inches of quilted foam which is sewn into the cover. This helps with airflow and gives it an initial soft feeling

The support layer is made of 1 inch of 4lb. cooling gel memory foam.

The transition layer is 3 inches of 3lb. cooling gel to further the transition among the layers and provide even more contouring and pressure relief.

The base layer is 6 inches of high-density foam similar to the Leesa.

Nectar-mattreess-how-its-made.jpg?strip=all&lossy=1&quality=70&resize=602%2C207&ssl=1 1024w, 300w, 768w, 50w, 234w, 468w, 702w, 936w, 1170w, 2340w, 1920w" alt="Nectar Mattress How its Made" width="602" height="207" data-lazy-type="image" data-src="" data-srcset="" />

It should be noted that the Leesa mattress is made in the USA while the Nectar mattress is made in China. However, both are CertiPUR-US Certified. Which means that the foams used in the mattresses are tested by a 3rd party to be free of harmful chemicals.

Benefits of the Leesa Mattress

The Leesa mattress is a very versatile mattress in that most sleepers will find it to feel great right away. The Avena foam will allow you to quickly sink into the mattress and will recover just as quickly. This means it is easy to move around on and even has some bounce as it behaves like latex.

The other major benefit of the Leesa mattress is that it is very breathable. The convoluted foam and density of the top layer means it doesn’t trap as much heat as other mattresses.

The Leesa also has a great Made in the USA story. The foams used in the mattress and the construction of the mattress itself are all domestic. They even have some great brand ambassadors such as Michael Phelps. Leesa has also been around a bit longer than Nectar. As of this writing, they will soon be celebrating their 3rd anniversary.

Benefits of the Nectar Sleep Mattress

The Nectar Mattress provides excellent pressure relief. This mattress does a very good job of conforming to your body. It provides great pressure relief and support at the same time. The quilted foam cover and layers of dense foam throughout make it very resilient mattress as well meaning that it should last a long time.

The Nectar mattress is also one of the more affordable mattresses online. Given the construction and great feel it has proven to be one of the best values out there. Although they don’t have any brand ambassadors, it has been getting good feedback despite some of the shipping delays caused by large demand when the mattress was first introduced.

Nectar or Leesa, Which is Best for You?

If you are on the fence about which mattress to choose here are a few points to consider.

If sleeping hot is your primary concern, the Leesa mattress would be a good choice. I found it to sleep a little cooler than the Nectar. However, the cover of the Nectar mattress is made with phase change technology that will draw heat away from you so it’s not to say that the Nectar sleeps hot, it’s just that the Leesa will sleep cooler.

I often recommend the Nectar to people who complain about lower back soreness. I found that the Nectar provides superior pressure relief and contouring. The dense foam used in the Nectar can address certain pain points in ways other mattresses can’t.

If Made in the USA and buying American is important, then Leesa is a clear winner. They even have a Team USA Gold Medalist sleeping on their mattress. Considering how fit Michael Phelps is, I’m sure he could sleep on almost anything. I think the true test may be an out of shape arthritic, elderly person as those are the people who will need a quality mattress the most.

If you are price sensitive, Nectar is a more affordable option. And affordable doesn’t mean cheap. In this case you get quality and value.

I think 1oo days is plenty of time to figure out if a mattress is a good fit although Nectar has raised the bar with a 365 night trial so you basically get a whole year. I live in Minnesota where the seasons are very distinct. Winter nights can get as low as minus 30 and summer nights in July can be humid and 90 so being able to test a mattress out in extremes can be important.

The Purple and Nectar mattresses are two very popular mattresses online. Interestingly, they are also completely different feels. In this post we break down the key differences between the Purple and Nectar mattress so that you can make a more informed decision about which is best for you.

Let’s start with the purchase process. Both can be bought direct online via their respective sites. Both should arrive about a week after purchase however because these mattresses are in such high demand, they may arrive a bit later than a week.

Each have a generous trial period although Nectar has a 365 day trial period while Purple has a 100 night trial.

Each also has a good warranty period. Purple has a 10 year warranty while Nectar advertises a lifetime warranty. Of course with any warranty it’s important to read the fine print but after reading through them, Nectar seems to be the most generous here.

Construction of the Nectar Mattress

The Nectar mattress is an all foam mattress. Below is a graphic that shows all the layers.

Nectar-Mattress-Layers-1200x453.png?strip=all&lossy=1&quality=70&resize=615%2C233&ssl=1 1024w, 300w, 768w, 50w, 1200w, 234w, 468w, 702w, 936w" alt="" width="615" height="233" data-lazy-type="image" data-src="" data-srcset="" />

Compare that with the specs of the Purple mattress

  • The top layers is a 2′ hyper elastic ploymer also know as the “smart grid”.
  • The midle layer is 3.5 inches of polyurethane foam.
  • The base layer is made of 4 inches of a polyurethane foam which is a standard foam mattress base.

In terms of motion transfer the Nectar does a better job in that it absorbs motion much better. Here are a few videos to illustrate the point.

First the Nectar Sleep Mattress

And now the Purple Mattress

Which sleeps cooler, Nectar or Purple?

Although the Nectar is treated with a phase change cooling material at the top cover, the Purple has the edge here as heat will pass right through the polymer grid. This makes it a top pick for hot sleepers.

In terms of cost, a queen size Nectar retails for $795 while the Purple costs $999 a significant difference in price.

Who should buy a Nectar Bed?

I recommend the Nectar mattress for people that want the ultimate in pressure relief. This mattress will contour extremely well. If you find your current mattress is leaving you with aches and pains in the moring, this mattress should cure that.

People that are looking for a good deal will be hard pressed to do better than the Nectar. It is one of the best priced mattresses online.

Finally, if your partner tends to wake you up at night from their tossing and turning, the Nectar will put a stop to that. You won’t feel a thing due to the high density foams used in the Nectar mattress.

Who Should buy a Purple Mattress?

Again, hot sleepers will find immediate relief with the Purple mattress. It is basically temperature neutral in that it really doesn’t trap heat. The top layer grid allows air to freely pass through.

I also tend to recommend the Purple mattress to heavier sleepers. We find at the Sleep Sherpa store in Minneapolis that heavier people respond well to the Purple and it gives them the right amount of support.

Finally, people that have tried tradtional foam and coil mattresses but are still unsatisfied owe it to themselves to give the Purple a try. It’s something you really need to lie on to understand how it works and for many, it’s the mattress they have been seeking.

Best Mattress for Back Pain

Looking for the best mattress for back pain? This guide will help you select a mattress that will help alleviate your back pain without creating other problems. Often people find a mattress that addresses lower or upper back pain only to find that they then get shoulder soreness. Below are some mattresses that should make your bed a more welcoming and relaxing place. While the right mattress will go a long way to alleviating back pain, it’s not a silver bullet. There are other health factors to consider that go beyond the limits of a good mattress. Keeping a healthy weight and stretching your body so that you are in alignment before getting to bed will help dramatically.

This guide provides useful tips on how to optimize your bedroom for the best sleeping experience with the least amount of pain.

What Causes Back Pain while Sleeping?

Back pain is caused by your spine being out of alignment while you sleep. No matter what your sleep position your are vulnerable to back pain.

According to Web MD, 80 percent of the population experiences some form of lower back pain at some time in thier lives. This is also known as nocturnal back pain.

There are 3 major causes of back pain that could be contributing to poor sleep at night.

  1. Mechanical problems with the spine, the most common of which is disc degenerations. Discs act like a shock absorber between your vertebrae and can break down with age.
  2.  Injuries such as a fall or car accident can sprain or fracture your spine causing your discomfort.
  3. A disease such as scoliosis or spinal stenosis which is a narrowing of the spinal column can lead to back pain. Even kidney stones, pregnancy or arthritis could cause lower back pain.

Despite these common causes, sometimes the cause of your back pain cannot be determined.

Best Stretched for Back Pain Before Bed

Before you even get into bed you should work on loosening your muscles and get into alignment. Because our lives are mostly sedentary we are usually contorting our bodies in unnatural positions as we sit at our desks. When it comes time to lay down, our body needs to adust. Stretching out before you go to sleep will allow you to get the full benefit from your mattress.

Check out these recommendations from Seasoned that you can do before bed. While you may not have time to do them every night, try and get some stretches in at least 3 nights a week and start reaping the benefits of better flexibility and longer and more productive sleep.

Back Pain and Side Sleepers

back-pain-for-side-sleepers.jpg?strip=all&lossy=1&quality=70&resize=599%2C400&ssl=1 1024w, 300w, 768w, 2048w, 234w, 468w, 702w, 936w, 1170w, 1920w" alt="back pain for side sleepers" width="599" height="400" data-lazy-type="image" data-src="" data-srcset="" />

Back pain for side sleepers can best be addressed in 2 ways. First, make sure you have a pillow that is giving you proper support. This goes for all types of sleepers but is especially applicable to side sleepers. I have noticed that most side sleepers sleep on pillows that do not have enough loft. This means their neck is out of alignment causing other issues.

Secondly, make sure that the middle of the mattress is giving your hips proper support. Check out this nice diagram from the Cleveland Clinic that illustrates this point.

I have found that side sleepers need to pay extra attention to spinal alignment.

In the picture below you can see that this sleeper is using a body pillow to keep from falling forward and her knees separated this keeps her from moving onto her stomach and with alignment.

Spinal-Alignment-Sleeping.jpg?strip=all&lossy=1&quality=70&resize=601%2C401&ssl=1 724w, 300w, 50w, 234w, 468w" alt="Spinal Alignment Sleeping" width="601" height="401" data-lazy-type="image" data-src="" data-srcset="" />

Back and stomach sleepers should look for firmer mattresses that don’t allow their lower back to sink too much. Conversely, if you have upper back problems it could be that your mattress is too firm. It’s a delicate balance so you need to listen to your body.

There are now new coil systems on the market that can be found in many of the online brands that ensure you are getting optimal support around your hips. The quantum coil system from Legget and Platt is a perfect example. It is a zoned coils system that has firmer coils in the middle of the mattress and softer coils on the top and bottom that help balance you out over the entire mattress.

The Brentwood Home Oceano mattress has this system and is one of my top picks for side sleepers with back pain because it is still a relatively soft mattress but also offers great support where it needs to. This is probably your best bet overall if you want quality, craftsmansip, value and comfort all in one.

How to Shop for A Mattress for Back Pain

Usually, every new mattress is going to feel better than your existing mattress. Chances are your existing mattress has worn down from years of use. I find that mattresses now start to break down after 7 years. Anything beyond that seems like bonus time.

If you are searching online for a mattress or heading out to the mattress store, make sure that you understand a bit about construction. In my opinion, a dense memory foam mattress is one of the best types of mattresses to alleviate back pain. That’s because they conform so well to your body that there isn’t any part that is not supported.

If you prefer a spring mattress, ask if the coil system is zoned. A zoned coil system will offer more support near your hips and lower back and allow your shoulders to sink towards the top of the mattress to keep you in alignment.

While shopping in stores, take your time. There’s no pressure to buy right away. The longer you lay on the mattress the better sense you will have of how it feels in your home during the night. I also advise people to shop when they aren’t too tired. If you shop for a mattress after a long day, just about anything will feel great and it will be harder to distinguish between mattresses.

Don’t Forget Your Pillow

While mattresses bear the majority of the blame for back pain, pillows play a part too. Often people sleep on pillows with the wrong amount of loft. If you have broad shoulders and sleep on your side, you need a pillow with a lot of loft so that your head won’t sink to far down. An adequately sized pillow will also prevent you from wanting to sleep with your arm under the pillow which causes shoulder pain.

Stomach sleepers need a thinner pillow. A thick pillow for a stomach sleeper often leads to lower back pain. The same is true for back sleepers although they can get by with a bit more loft, especially if they snore.

The Winkbed skews a little firmer than most online mattresses but it gives you great support along your lower back. If you have upper back pain as well, I recommend going with the soft version over the luxury firm. This mattress sleeps cool as it is primarily a spring mattress with a Tencel cover.
